A global spread of a new disease is called a pandemic.
A flu pandemic occurs when a new flu virus emerges and spreads around the world, and most people do not have immunity to it. The viruses that have caused pandemics in the past have typically come from influenza viruses that infect animals.
In some ways, pandemic flu looks like seasonal flu, but in others it can be very different.
