Mi tema es: LA TRISTE HISTORIA DE LOS ABORÍGENES AUSTRALIANOS
After much study and research, it is believed that Australia may easily be home to the first inhabitants of our planet.
The Aborigines had been in Australia for approximately 60,000 years when the first English landed in 1770. Between 300,000 and 750,000 Aboriginal people inhabited the continent, but in 1911 (123 years after the first English settlements), only 31,000 Aboriginal people remained.
The English declared Australia to be terra nullius, i.e. without human inhabitants, and this justified the dispossession of indigenous lands and the plundering of the continent. They took away the fertile land and threw the Aborigines into the drylands of the interior.
The vast majority of Aboriginal families had children taken from them, and in some cases this was repeated over several generations. Many children never saw their parents again and today many are still looking for them.
Families who resisted were punished cruelly for speaking their parents' language or trying to escape and return to their family. The government stole mainly from children of mixed race, i.e. light-skinned. They trained them to work as maids or farm workers, and forced them to reject their identity and culture.
Today, there are more than 400 Australian Aboriginal peoples, each with distinct cultural features and a unique geographical location. They are identified by the name of their indigenous language or by the word with which they call themselves.
Indigenous Australian communities have serious health and economic deficiencies and social indicators place them in inferior positions in terms of health, education, employment, poverty and crime.
