The long and triumphant reign of its first emperor, Augustus, began a golden age of peace and prosperity; by contrast, the Roman Empire’s decline and fall by the fifth century A.D. was one of the most dramatic implosions in the history of human civilization.

El fortalecimiento del personalismo condujo a los triunviratos y a las dictaduras de César o Augusto, y supuso el fin de la República y el principio de una nueva etapa, el Imperio.
El Imperio es el sistema en el que el poder político real estaba en manos de un solo individuo, el emperador. Se inauguró con el emperador Augusto. El Senado quedó limitado a ser un órgano de apoyo de ese poder político.
Se denomina Alto Imperio al periodo que va de Augusto a Diocleciano y Bajo Imperio el que tiene lugar entre Diocleciano y la caída del Imperio Romano en Occidente.
