La diferencia entre los verbos regulares y los verbos irregulares radica en que los verbos regulares se ajustan al modelo de conjugación mientras que los irregulares se apartan de este modelo.
El verbo cantar, a cuya raíz (cant-) se añaden las terminaciones respectivas:
