Today we are going to review the verb tenses for speaking in the past tense in English! When learning English, one of the main difficulties has to do with grammar and the way we have to express this verb tense. Especially when talking about events that happened at different times in the past and in cases where we need to locate and express how some happened before the others, or vice versa.
New Call-to-action
Past in English: structure
Grammar: the past in English is mainly expressed through 6 verb tenses:
past simple
past continuous
present perfect
present perfect continuous
past perfect
past perfect continuous Although they have different ways of building to have everything under control you should know how the past tense and the participle are formed in the regular verbs and the list of irregular verbs.
Use: although all these verb tenses refer to the past, using one tense or another will depend on whether the action has ended or not, what its duration has been and when they have happened with respect to other actions.
Time expressions: Time expressions like for, since, or ago are used only with certain verb tenses. You must know what expressions you can use with each verb tense.
Past tense expressions in English
With the simple past you can use a variety of time expressions, all of which are determined from past and finished tenses:
10 years ago ... yesterday ... last week ... last month ... in 2007 ... an hour ago ... this morning ... last Friday ... last summer ... a few months ago ... at 11 o'clock ... last night ... several weeks ago
You may have noticed that there I have a couple of expressions with "ago" - what ago means "so long ago".
3 years ago = 3 years ago.
2 hours ago = 2 hours ago.
10 minutes ago = 10 minutes ago.
More in the article about to, from and does here.
And well, we should also say that some time expressions are ambiguous. Something like this morning may be present if you are speaking in the morning, but past if you are speaking in the afternoon or evening.
And if you say something like Monday, it is the context or the verb that says if you speak of present, past or future.
I do yoga on Mondays. (A habit in the present).
I did yoga on Monday. (Simple past.)
I am going to do yoga on Monday. (A future plan with going to).
