The gut microbiota is the community of living microorganisms residing in the digestive tract. Many groups of researchers worldwide work to decipher the genome of the microbiota. Modern techniques for studying the microbiota have brought us closer to the knowledge of an important number of bacteria that are not cultivable, and of the relationship between the microorganisms that inhabit us and our homeostasis. The microbiota is essential for proper body growth, the development of immunity and nutrition. The alterations in the microbiota could explain, at least in part, some epidemics of humanity such as asthma and obesity. Dysbiosis has been associated with a number of gastrointestinal disorders including non-alcoholic fatty liver, celiac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. In the present work we will deal with nomenclature, modern study techniques, the functions of the intestinal microbiota and the relationship it has with health and disease.
