The debate started when in early December a user on Twitter asked the SAR if the next decade begins on January 1, 2020 or 2021.

The RAE replied that the new decade will begin in 2021 because "each decade begins in a year ending in 1 and ends in a year ending in 0".

"Thus, the first decade of the 21st century is the one that goes from 2001 to 2010; the second, from 2011 to 2020, etc.," adds the RAE, citing the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of doubts.
