Friendship, to me, has always been more important than family. As the saying goes, friends are the family you choose. I don’t think much of family, nor understand its supposed value, perhaps as I’ve never been close to my own.
There are myriad reasons for our distant relationship. Firstly, there is a vast cultural and age difference (40 years) between myself and my Korean parents. Both were absent during my early years as my father worked abroad and eventually moved back to South Korea, whereupon my relationship with my mother (who still lives in the UK) deteriorated. As a result, I attended boarding school from 11 and have barely spent time at home since. I’ve always thought of myself as essentially an only child: my sister, who is 14 years older than I am, moved away from home when I was four. I recall my childhood as one that was not necessarily lonely, but lived predominantly alone.

I’m unfazed by my upbringing. Our family dynamic is all I’ve ever known. Instead, I found love and support from the friendships I made all throughout my life: school, university, living and working in London. I’m so grateful for my school years, not only for the escape it gave me but for the life-long friendships I’ve come out with, where growing up and spending everyday with one another during those formative adolescent years created unbreakable bonds.
