The stripped pajama boy
Bruno is a 9-year-old boy who lives in Berlin with his parents, his sister and the maid, Maria. One day when he got home after school he saw the maid collecting all her things, they were moving. No one had said anything to him before and Bruno was very sad since that would mean never seeing his three best friends for life, or going down the railing, or seeing grandparents ... His father had to do a very important job and that was the reason for the move; they would live in "Auchviz".
When Bruno saw his new house for the first time he was amazed, it was much smaller than his previous house, it was very sad and very cold, it was clear that he did not like it but he had to get used to it. The days passed and Bruno got bored he didn't know what to do, one day he built a swing. He asked Officer Kotler to get him a tire and he built it, but when Bruno was playing he fell down and the only person nearby to help him was a servant who made them food. He struck up a conversation with the boy, he had been a doctor before getting there. Later Bruno's mother arrived and she thanked the servant, but they would tell the commander that she had cured him.
The boy did not know what to do to avoid boredom and one afternoon he walked and walked along that wire fence that he saw from the window of his room, he wanted to know how far he could see he saw a shadow and as he got closer it grew larger, when he reached the point saw a boy on the other side of the fence.
Bruno and the boy started talking. His name was Shmuel, a rare name for Bruno. The children became friends and Bruno went there every afternoon, to that point on the fence where his new friend was. During all the time that Bruno spent in "Auchviz" the only thing that the two children did was to speak since each one was on the side of the fence. They talked about the different lives they led; Shmuel had shaved hair and always wore the same pajamas, striped pajamas, and it was not that he had a good time in there, Bruno however did not realize many things, such as that his friend did not `pass it really good in there and he only cared about himself.
After a year, Bruno's mother decided it was time to go back to Berlin, to his new home. All but the commander would return. When Bruno got the news, he was a little sad. The following afternoon it was raining heavily and the boy feared he would not be able to say goodbye to Shmuel, but at last the rain stopped and he made the same path that he always had there. The day before Shmuel couldn't find his father and asked Bruno for help. Bruno loved to play scouts when he was in Berlin and as they had never played together he promised to help find his father so Shmuel grabbed him a striped pajamas like the one he was wearing and from the hole under the Barbed wire Bruno entered the world of Shmuel. They entered the interior of the field and a group of men with weapons went to where they were, Bruno was scared thinking that they were going to catch him in there but his friend told him that it would happen soon. They were taken to a room, they were all close together and glued together, people were scared and Bruno did not understand anything, soon everything would happen ...
Bruno never returned home. The next day everyone was looking for the child without stopping, the mother did not return to Berlin waiting for news but one day she did so hopefully if Bruno had returned alone. The commander earned the soldiers' antipathy day by day, he kept thinking of his son. One day she returned to the place where her son's clothes were found and observing the place she noticed the hole under the fence. His legs failed him and he ended up sitting on the floor.
Some time later some soldiers came after him, he no longer cared what they did to him.
