A piñata

A piñata is a container, which is beautifully decorated and often filled with candies and sweets. It is often in a shape of a star, an animal or a popular film character. Although it is very popular in Mexico, it actually has Chinese origins. Strangely, it arrived to Mexico through religion. Towards the end of the 1500s, Diego de Soria got authorisation to carry out Christian masses during the eight days before Christmas, with the intention of spreading the Catholic religion among the natives of the State of Mexico.

The piñata was a part of this religious mass, often filled with fruits. By trying to break it with a wooden pole, the person was considered free of sin if they managed to break it open. The piñatas took the shape of a star. Piñatas became very popular and went from something done within the church to in the streets.

Now we can see piñatas in Christmas traditional “posadas”, or in birthday parties where people choose some theme for the party, and then the piñata is related to that theme.

The original piñata was a clay pot carefully decorated into a star, but it was very dangerous and hard to break, nowadays it is made of recycled paper and could hap almost any shape.

The kids happily, stand around the piñata, waiting not always patiently their turn, the piñata is move around the place to avoid a fast game, and sometimes they even cover the kid ́s eyes so they have sloppy movement, as a result, the game becomes more interesting and fun. For some kids it is hard to hit the piñata, honestly giving the piñata the shape of a beloved character in hardly a good idea.

But when the game is over, the piñata is broken and all the sweets are out the kids carelessly run towards them and try to catch as mush as they can, honestly even some adults try to get a prize.
