The Magnus effect, known in honor of the German physicist and chemist Heinrich Gustav Magnus (1802-1870), is the name given to the physical phenomenon by which the rotation of an affected object to its trajectory through a fluid, such as for example, air. It is the product of various phenomena, including the Bernoulli principle and the non-slip condition of the fluid on the surface of the object. This effect was first described by Magnus in 1853.
