The Hellenic civilization of ancient Greece spread over the Balkan Peninsula, the islands of the Aegean Sea and the coasts of the Anatolian peninsula, in present-day Turkey, constituting the so-called Hélade. The Greek or Greek civilization has its origin in the Cretan and Mycenaean cultures.
By 2700 B.C. A rich and flourishing Bronze Age commercial culture developed on the island of Crete. This culture is called Minoan or Cretan. Around 1600 B.C., the Achaeans, a Greek-speaking people of Indo-European origin, broke into the territory of continental Greece, settling in the extreme northeast of the Peloponnese peninsula. These people came to dominate the Cretans. Its most important city was Mycenae.
Around 1200 BC, another people of Greek origin, the Dorians, who used iron weapons, seized Greece, defeating the Mycenaeans. The Trojan War, described by Homer in the Iliad, was probably one of the warlike conflicts that were related to this invasion. Sparta and Corinth became the main Doric cities. With the Dorians began a period of cultural decline known as the Dark Ages.
