Archduke Francisco Fernando (1863-1914), heir to the throne of Francisco José I, emperor of Austria-Hungary, visited Sarajevo (in the province of Bosnia and Herzegovina) as Inspector General of the Army. Austria-Hungary had administered Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1878, but Serbian nationalists were outraged by the province's formal annexation to Austria in 1908. The Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand was determined to assassinate Francisco Fernando, a company that succeeded in its second attempt, on June 28, 1914. The murder gave grounds for Austria-Hungary to act against Serbia and send it a severe ultimatum.
