SOME PANDEMIC DISEASE HAPPENED IN VENEZUELA BEFORE COVID-19
Epidemics have a social-economic character which affect certain historic periods of Venezuela´s history. An example of this was The Bubonic Plague, known as the Black Death, in the middle Ages, caused the deaths of a quarter of Europe's population. The last plague epidemic originated in China, in the year 1893, and then spread to Europe at the end of the century. The French port of Marseille, in 1903, was the open door to the American Continent, the plague being detected in Panama in 1905 and officially recognized by Cipriano Castro's Government in 1908. The Venezuelan epidemic occurred during the Liberal Restoration Period. It was met by the Sanitary Authorities with a vision of 'medical positivism'. In our present research, we analyze the importance of Puerto Cabello, together with La Guaira and Cumana, the ports of arrival for the major quantity of European imports by steamships during 1903-1908. The sanitary strategy of medical health advisors and the nonfulfilment of proposed rules within the framework of the crisis of the Venezuelan Liberalism allowed the illness to enter and spread.(1)
After this plague, another pandemic disease affected Venezuela in the end of XVIII century and the beginning of the next. It was the Malaria endemic disease. Venezuela had the most human malaria cases in Latin America before 1936. During 1891–1920, malaria was endemic to more than 600,000 km2 of Venezuela; deaths from malaria substantially reduced the population during 1891–1920. No pathogen, including influenza virus (1918 pandemic), caused more deaths than malaria during 1905–1945. Early malaria epidemics had mortality rates of 60–70 deaths/1,000 persons; rates were as high as 531 and 1,125 deaths/100,000 persons in Carabobo and Cojedes States in 1941(2)
The early success of malaria control in Venezuela was caused by interruption of malaria transmission through systematic and integrative infection and vector control. This control included detailed knowledge of malaria epidemiology at the local level (microepidemiology); case management (diagnosis, patient treatment, and mass drug administration); mapping malaria cases; a malaria health information system updated weekly; community participation through volunteer community health workers; application of larvicides and imagocides; and sanitary engineering (housing
improvement, water management). Before DDT was available, the Venezuelan scientific Arnoldo Gabaldón used these tools to reduce malaria incidence by 40% during 1941– 1944 and malaria-associated deaths by 45% during 1936–1940). However, DDT was a key factor in the eradication program in Venezuela when it became available in 1945.
Although the Covid-19 has not reached the same levels of deaths as the Bubonic Plague and Malaria, especially in Venezuela, where these pandemic caused death, pain and great economic losses it has to take care because it is so violent to cause damage in people who has taken contact with the virus, whether for direct contact with an infected person or does not have the minimal care of preventing the contact with it (use the facemask, anti-bacterial gel with 60% of alcohol and disposable surgical gloves) before to go away from your home (if it would be necessary, and stay in your home the mayor possible time following the medical care’s advices from the sanity authorities until they have considered that the risk of contagious from Covid-19 could be controlled and would have the certainty that the cases that would be diagnosed have been in medical control by the authorities.
That is why the reason that, if you did not know about other pandemic diseases before this in Venezuela, image the medicine studies in those years that there were so limited and doctors were few, without special instruments and investigation´s equipment to prevent and attack the causes or factors that produced these pandemic and try to compare with actual moment with this world´s pandemic that has caused a lot of deaths, many contagious people and a grave economic damage in the 1st world countries as know U.S.A (the principal death people caused by Covid-19 until this moment), Europe (Italy, Spain and Great Britain), China (the origin of this virus, according to the investigations), it was noted by the sanitary authorities in the final days of December 2019 and continued during the following months of this year, and in South America, especially in Ecuador and Colombia. For these reasons and more, please stay in your home! And keep yourself and the rest of your family!
