Despite the fact that the family is the first socializing agent during childhood, currently this no longer plays the totalizing socializing role, since other agents have assumed many of its functions. One of these agents is the school.

Since there are few studies on the relationship between family and school in rural sectors, a descriptive-comparative study on the subject was carried out in two rural schools in the Valparaíso Region. To obtain the required information, interviews were applied to the mothers, the teachers and a sample of children who were enrolled in grades 1-6, documents were reviewed and ethnographic observations were made.

The main results indicate that both the family and the children studied attribute great importance to school and have high educational expectations. The perception of teachers and professors is, however, different since a high percentage of indicators indicated that the family gives little importance to the school. This lack of agreement is also identified in relation to the motivation of the family at school, since they do not participate in their activities.

Key words: Family, school, expectations, rurality.
