1- What is the respiratory system?

The respiratory system is in charge of providing the oxygen that the body needs and eliminating the carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide that is produced in all cells through the process called respiration.

Breathing is an involuntary and automatic process, in which oxygen is extracted from the inspired air and waste gases are expelled with the exhaled air. The organs that are part of the respiratory system are: nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs and diaphragm.

2- Breathing process

When we breathe, what we are looking for is to capture oxygen, a gas that is essential for our cells to live and develop. The respiratory system allows oxygen to enter the body and then remove carbon dioxide, which is the residual gas that remains after the cells have used the oxygen.

Air enters our body through inspiration and CO2 (carbon dioxide) is removed by expiration.

When the air we inhale reaches the alveoli, oxygen enters the blood through small capillaries located in the walls of the alveoli. There it is taken to the heart from where it is sent to the rest of the body. Conversely, carbon dioxide, which leaves the body's cells, travels through the capillaries back to the heart, which will then send this blood to the lungs and the opposite process will be carried out so that the CO2 can be exhaled.

The air is inhaled through the nose, where it is heated and moistened. The nostrils are connected to the paranasal sinuses or sinus cavities, hollow spaces inside some of the bones of the head that help the inspired air to warm and moisten.

Then air passes into the pharynx, continues through the larynx, and enters the trachea. Halfway up the chest, the trachea divides into two bronchi that divide again, again and again, into secondary, tertiary, and eventually 250,000 bronchioles.

At the end of the bronchioles, they are grouped into clusters of alveoli, small air sacs, where gas exchange with the blood takes place.

3- Organs of the respiratory system

The following organs participate in the breathing process:

3.1- Nose

It consists of two wide cavities whose function is to allow the entry of air, which is moistened, filtered and heated to a certain temperature through structures called turbinates.

 3.2- Pharynx

Membranous, muscular duct that helps air flow into the lower airways.
