TENNIS Tennis is one of the oldest sports in the world. The name 'tennis' is said to come from the French expression 'tennis' which means to drink. The player preparing to serve the ball usually shouted this word at the receiver at the other end of the court. Lawn Tennis was first played on an hourglass-shaped court divided by a hanging net. Tennis started as an indoor game called Court or royal tennis, which used to be played by French and English royalty. It was only in 1873 that "grass tennis" (popularly played today) was introduced by a British Army officer, Major Walter Winfield.
