1994El unknown Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) took four municipalities of the southern state of Chiapas and declared "liberated zone". Chiapas is one of the states with the largest Maya population, is also the least literate in Castilian and the poorest. However, it has significant reserves of oil and gas, which drew 21% of national oil production. At first, the government played down the uprising. When the death toll exceeded --the thousand Mexican army had been moved to the region-- and allegations of summary executions, the government reiterated, at the request of the Catholic Bishop Samuel Ruiz and protests from civil society and national international, agreed to talks and unilaterally declared a ceasefire.
