Mario Vargas Llosa was born in Arequipa, Peru, on 03/28/1936, the only son of a married couple who divorced shortly after his birth and reconciled when the writer was 10 years old. He studied in various Catholic and public schools, including 2 years in a military boarding school. In 1958 he obtained a degree in humanities from the University of San Marcos de Lima and in 1971 a doctorate in Philosophy and Letters from the Complutense University of Madrid.
At 19 he married his in-law aunt, Julia Urquidi, whom he divorced in 1964. A year later he married his cousin Patricia Llosa, with whom he has had 3 children. He has lived most of his adult life in Spain, France, England and Switzerland. In 1993 he obtained the Spanish nationality without losing the Peruvian one and in 2011 he was awarded the noble title of Marquis
In 1990 he was a candidate for the presidency of Peru; Although he was the most voted in the first round, he lost in the second to Alberto Fujimori (in English). In 2010 the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature, which adds to a long list of recognitions.
He has recently taken over the pages of fandula magazines or the so-called "heart press", breaking his decades-long marriage to commit, at 80, to the famous Spanish jet-setter, Isabel Preysler, ex-wife Julio Iglesias and mother of the also singer Enrique Iglesias. If it happens - once he gets the divorce from his cousin Patricia Llosa - it would be the writer's third marriage
