Active components of an energy source

An active component in a simple electrical circuit is the power source. This voltage source can be a battery or a female socket. In the closed cycle of a simple functional circuit, the load sent from the active component, through the transmission medium, eventually returns to it. However, by the time the charge reaches the active component it has already lost the energy supplied by the battery.

Passive component or load

The passive component of a simple electrical circuit is also known as a load or resistor, and is any object that requires an electricity supply to function. Examples of these are numerous, but include light bulbs, heaters, motors, and so on. The passive component is the receiver of the energy stored within the electrical charge sent by the active component, the energy being depleted there as the electrical charge moves through the resistance.

Lines of transmission

Transmission lines are the means by which the active component delivers its load to the passive component. Materials that are effective transmitters easily allow electricity to flow through themselves and are known as conductors. Materials that are inefficient in allowing electrical flow are known as insulators. Metal wires are the most common form of transmitter in a simple circuit, particularly copper, a material that excels in transmitting electrical charges from active components. Ideally, a load should not experience a loss in energy level as it passes through a transmitter.
