Basically, the United States support France with its war in Vietnam, because it wanted to stop the spread of communism. Therefore, A is the correct option.

In the Cold War were several proxy wars between the Western Bloc and Eastern Bloc. Being the western led for the United States and the Eastern for the Soviet Union. With those wars both blocs didn’t confront directly, but they fight for spread their ideologies in other countries.

The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was one the many proxy wars, where first France and later the Unite States tried to destroy the communism in the region. In the beginning France fought with the Viet Minh, since they wanted to break the French control in Vietnam. All this process started in the first years of the Second World War, and when this global war ended, France was still fighting in Vietnam.

First the United States only gave economical support to France, between other things, but with the Cold War the Americans chose to enter fully in Vietnam. There they fought against the Viet Cong, who were some kind of Viet Minh heirs. Eventually, the United States lose and left the country.

In conclusion, the Viet Minh was a communist group who wished to end the colonial control of France over Vietnam. They fought for several decades, since the beginnings of the second world war until the half of the cold war (under the new formation of the Viet Cong).
