The conquest of America was the process of exploration, conquest and settlement in the New World carried out by Spain and Portugal in the 16th century, and in the participation of other later European powers, after Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. The Conquest gave rise to very powerful colonial and colonial regimes, which resulted in the cultural assimilation of the majority of indigenous populations, and their submission to the laws of the conquering powers.1
