Green design is the "creation of buildings that are energy efficient, healthy, comfortable, flexible and specific for a long service life" (Foster + Partners, 1999). Ecological design should have a minimal impact on the environment, both in terms of products and materials used in construction and the functionality of the building.

A sustainable design should always seek to amalgamate environmentally preferred results throughout the life cycle of the building. Choices made during the design stage can have a major impact on the sustainability of a building. Therefore, if a building can change from generation to generation and remain green, it is truly sustainable. This is what is at the center of sustainable design, the ability to undergo changes over time.

Green design can often be seen as a complicated concept, but not a complicated one. Green design, and how to easily incorporate it into a design project, will be discussed in detail at the RIBA Journal One-Day Sustainability Conference [LINK REMOVED - NO MORE CURRENT] in London on Tuesday 24 June.

The steps to achieve it

Designing for the future is a key part of design, but it is of particular importance in green design. How the space will work for its original purpose and how it could be used in the future is at the core of this concept.

Sustainable construction also considers whether a space can vary for specific multiples at different periods during its useful life. Furthermore, factors such as the ease with which the space can be converted and modernized, without replacing the modified products and technologies and reducing the impact the building will have on the environment, will also make it more sustainable.

Therefore, one must consider not only how environmentally friendly a product / technology is, but also how it will degrade overtime, how often it will require replacing and monitoring its long-term limits.

BIM is contributing greatly to the drive to improve green design. Not only does BIM help reduce waste during the initial build phase, but the technical data attached to a BIM object can help predict the life cycle of that object, from specification to construction and lifetime use, and finally until possible reuse.
