The spectacled caiman, cachirre, stifle white guagipal or baba (Caiman crocodilus) is a species of carnivorous reptile that inhabits the different types of freshwater streams, swamps and marshes in southern Mexico, Central America and northwest from the South. It was introduced to Puerto Rico as a pet in the 1960s and 1970s, and is now found in all water bodies of the island.
Males reach a length between 1.8 and 2.5 m long and 1.4 m females. They feed on different species of animals: crustaceans, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals.
Mating occurs in the rainy season. The female makes the nest agglomerating small amounts of dry soil and vegetation and gets there from 15 to 40 eggs. Incubation lasts an average of 13 weeks. At birth, the pups are about 20 cm.
