The purpose of the research reported in this article is to investigate through the APOE theory (Actions, Processes, Objects and Schemes) in the mental constructions that first-year university students - arranged in a case study - show in the construction of the concept of probability. The general structure of the study is based on the methodological cycle provided by the APOE theory itself, designing a genetic decomposition from a historical-epistemological study of the concept, which is tested through a questionnaire applied to the case. The results obtained indicate that some of the students who have answered the questionnaire reach the object construction of the probability concept, which shows the validity of the genetic decomposition proposed as a construction model of the concept in question.
