My perfect occupation is being a chef
Being a chef is a really interesting occupation because every day I learn new recipes and discover new flavors. A chef is in charge of the kitchen in restaurants or other places where food is served. They watch all activity and food preparation with any staff that would assist in the kitchen. They supervise the preparation of food for it’s garnishing and presentation, as well as, the seasonings for a perfect taste. A chef orders food or kitchen supplies and provides cost estimates to the employer. They monitor any staff requirements and production schedules to be sure any services are delivered on time. being a chef requires years of work experience and hard work in order to get far because it's such a competitive industry.
Working Place:
Chefs can work at restaurants, grocery stores, specialty food stores, residential care facilities, schools, hospitals, private households, or catering companies. They may be employed on ships, or at lodges or resorts. Though their work locations may vary, the work environments of chefs share many characteristics.
Benefits:
Career Options Aplenty
Chefs have the opportunity to hone their skills in restaurants and resorts, country clubs and private homes. Those who enjoy travel can pack their bags and find work on cruise lines, convention centers, casinos and many other exciting destinations.
Creative License
Chefs are in charge when it comes to determining what goes on the menu and how it is prepared for guests. This creates plenty of opportunities to get creative and try recipe and menu combinations that will set the venue apart from the competition.
Every Day is a New Experience
While there are routines in every kitchen, each day creates plenty of possibilities for breaking the mold and trying something new. Whether it's a special event or a special's menu, chefs have the ability to shape the day to their liking.
Bonuses, Free Food, Free Drinks
Chefs are often given bonuses based on the performance of the restaurant. As the reputation of the venue grows, these bonuses can become significant. Many venues also offer chefs free food and drinks as part of the compensation package.
Contras:
Long and unpredictable working hours
It is not a 9-5 job where you have fixed working hours! Being a chef, you must be ready to work at odd hours. It is not uncommon to see chefs working on long, grueling shifts.
Low pay in many cases
In the above section, I mentioned how chefs working at high end setups earn good salary. But when it comes to chefs outside that ‘executive club’, pay is not often up to the mark! Many chefs are known to put in long hours of work. And the salary they get in return is not at all justifiable!
‘Not too comfortable’ working conditions
Chefs ply their trade in testing conditions and environment. A typical kitchen hosts hazards like smoke, fire and sharp tools. Carelessness can often result in accidents.
Physically and mentally demanding job
Chefs remain standing for long hours. Standing up, without too much rest, is a part of their job. Add to that long working hours and you have a job that drains your energy.
