The large families of South America, may include more children and the extended family. The extended family includes uncles, aunts, grandparents and some cousins. The small family in the United States might include few children and only the immediate family. In the large cities of the United States, the grandparents might want to live alone. Aunts and uncles will often do the same. As a result, the small family may mean the father, the mother, and two children.
Many factors might influence the size of the family. In the large cities, houses and apartments may be expensive. They might be small. The extended family may not be comfortable in them. The streets may be dangerous and the children cannot play freely. Grandfather and grandmother cannot live alone on a farm.
The cities are growing. Families in the cities will be smaller. This will be a loss. Children are often more mature in the extended family.
