Facts:
1) They then had to survive being seduced by beautiful maidens: Once this poor teenager was allowed out of the cave, he had to spend four nights in a ceremonial hut with the four most beautiful maidens from the region, whose job was to dance around and generally try to seduce him.
2) Potential chiefs spent 9 years inside a cave: According to Oscar, when the tribe chose a potential new cacique (usually the old chief’s oldest nephew, aged between 13 and 17) the potential leader had to spend 9 years in a cave preparing himself mentally for the inauguration ceremony.
3) The new cacique got covered in honey and gold dust: If the new chief survived all the preparation challenges, he would finally be ready for the great inauguration ceremony. This began by smearing him in honey and then covering him from top to bottom in gold dust before lowering him into the lagoon.
