In meteorology, precipitation is any form of hydrometeor that falls from the atmosphere and reaches the Earth's surface. This phenomenon includes rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, hail, but not virga, mist, or dew, which are forms of condensation rather than precipitation. The amount of precipitation over a point on the earth's surface is called rainfall, or rainfall amount.
Precipitation is an important part of the hydrological cycle, fresh water to the emerging part of the earth's crust and, therefore, favoring the life on our planet, both of animals and vegetables, which need water to live. Precipitation is generated in the clouds, when it reaches a saturation point; at this point the water droplets increase in size until reaching a mass in which it is precipitated by the force of gravity. It is possible to inseminate clouds to induce precipitation by spraying a fine powder or an appropriate chemical (such as silver nitrate) inside the cloud, speeding up the formation of water droplets and increasing the probability of loss, although these tests have not been satisfactory.
Although the rain is the most frequent of the precipitations, the other types should not be forgotten: the snowfall and the hail. Each of these precipitations can be classified into different types.
The wettest place on the planet is the municipality of Puerto López, in Colombia, with an annual rainfall of 12,892 mm. Other criticisms suggest that Lloró and López de Micay in Colombia had a failure of 13 473 mm.
