The brain and body tell these muscles what to do without you even having to think about it. You can't use smooth muscles to "ball" your arm or jump in the air. But you have smooth muscles working all over your body. In the stomach and digestive system, they contract (tense) and relax to help food move through your body. Smooth muscles also get to work when you feel unwell and need to vomit. These muscles push food out of the stomach, up the esophagus, and out of the mouth.
