The Hare with Many Friends
Hare was very popular with all the other
animals. She thought they were her friends.
One day, she heard the sound of dogs. Hare was
frightened, so she ran to her friend Horse. "Dogs are
coming! Please let me climb on your back. You're
tall, and you could / can/ have to run fast," Hare
said. "I don't have to / wasn't able to / can't," answered
Horse. "I shouldn't / might have to work, but you've
got so many other friends! I'm sure they will be able to /
mustn't/ may not help you." Hare then asked for help from
Bull and Goat, but they couldn't / shouldn't/ can't help
her. Bull said, "I can / need to / should go to an important
meeting now." Goat said, "My back hurts. I couldn't /
don't have to / mustn't carry anyone." Hare then ran to
Sheep. "Please, must/can/ should you help me?" she
asked. Sheep said, "I'm afraid of dogs! They might /
don't need to / have to hurt me!" and ran away. Finally,
Hare talked to Baby Cow. He said, "I mustn't/ couldn't
can't help you. I'm too young." "Nobody will help me."
thought Hare, so she ran as fast as she could / can/
must, and was safe from the dogs. The lesson of the story
is: Someone with many friends has no friends.
