Christopher Columbus has been recognized to have discovered America, while many others had been in America before Columbus. Does he deserve this recognition? Who really discovered America?

Columbus deserves some kind of recognition. Columbus, while not necessarily the first to stumble upon America, was the first who, given the backing of a powerful, wealthy and technologically advanced Spanish monarchy, was able to take financial and imperial advantage of his discovery. There's a debate on if he actually deserves a holiday or not but in the end it depends on how you personally see it.
