Also, as a proverb that people actually say, "Money is the root of all evil" is a lot more common. I've actually heard a few people say it with "The love of", but I never knew it was from the Bible (which I've never read at all).

I can't judge about the other languages, but in Russian the variant with just "money" is very common, whilst I don't think I've ever heard the variant with the "love of money". (Yeah, I've never read the whole Bible. :o)
