The hienidos, better known as hyenas, are part of the Hyaenidae family and have the bite of all mammals. The most distinctive of these animals is the sound emitting, very similar to a sharp laugh. The hyenas are divided into four species: striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena), Brown Hyena (Hyaena brunnea), stained or spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) and the proteles or earth Wolf (Proteles cristata).
These carnivores are distributed on the African continent, mainly in the Sub-Saharan region and also occupy regions of the Middle East such as the India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
They can be found in arid areas with little vegetation as the Savannah and scrubland at temperatures ranging around the 35 degree Celsius.
Description of the hyenas:At first glance the hyenas have the appearance of a canid, although they really have anatomies and very different skills.
They have large, pointed ears. As its name implies, the speckled species has patches throughout their body and their fur is short compared to the Brown Hyena species which has abundant and very long. The latter is also characterized by horizontal stripes on its four legs.
The front legs of the hyenas are longer than the rear and it is for this reason that their bodies are slightly inclined backwards. They have short, non-retractable claws used for digging and have more ability to run.
Your teeth is very powerful, because they are specialized in feeding on carrion and crush bones of large animals, so a bite on the neck of the prey, is a synonym for a nearly instant death.
Feeding hyenas:The hienidos are opportunistic scavengers, feeding on dead animals abandoned by other carnivores. When they are in herds, they can scare away large animals such as lions and cheetahs to stay with their food.
They have an extraordinary sense of smell, as they have the ability to smell dead animals over long distances. They can live without water for several days, as they get large amounts of water from the lifeless bodies.
Your diet include rodents, reptiles and birds. They can also eat antelopes, wild pigs, buffalos and snakes.
Reproduction of the hyenas
The hyenas are polygamous. The males perform body movements to receive acceptance of females. The hyenas gestation period lasts about four months and the young are born with a weight of around 700 grams. They may arise from one to five pups and are totally dependent on breast milk for the first three months of his life.
For 15 months, they remain in a lair protected from predators. In a period ranging from 15 to 30 months already, they can get to feed on their own.
The females can be expected between 12 to 41 months to have another litter.
