Francis Chichester
Francis Chichester was a British pilot and sailor.
He was born in Devon, England, on 17th September
1901. When Chichester was 18, he moved to New
Zealand. He got married in 1923 and had a son, but
his wife died in 1929. At that time, Chichester decided
to become a pilot. First, he returned to England and
took flying lessons. Next, he flew solo to Australia. In
1937, Chichester got married again and had another
son. He continued flying, but then, he found a new
hobby - sailing. After that, he competed in ocean races
and sailed solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, in
1967, he became world famous when he completed a
round-the-world solo trip in 274 days. Chichester died
on 26th August, 1972.
