Napoleon manages to become emperor of the First French Empire after proclaiming himself in that position, prior proclamation of a new Constitution in 1802. This movement was supported by the Aristocracy and its coronation was celebrated in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in 1804, in the presence of the Pope Pius VII.
