The pharynx is a tube-shaped structure that is located in the neck and lined with a mucous membrane; It connects the oral cavity and nostrils with the esophagus and larynx respectively, and through it both air and food pass through, so it is part of the digestive system as well as the respiratory. Both pathways are separated by the epiglottis, which acts as a valve. In humans, the pharynx is about thirteen centimeters, extended from the outer base of the skull to the sixth or seventh cervical vertebra, at the height of the caudal edge of the cricoid cartilage. It is located in front of the spine.
