Gym Renovation Planned
The university announced today the campus gym will be closed for the next six months in order to renovate certain areas of the gym. University spokesperson Roger Carlyle said that the renovations, which are long overdue, will be focused on improving the showers and lockers in the men's and women's locker-rooms. The university has made arrangements with a local gym in town to accommodate all students while the on-campus gym is being renovated for the next several months. Students will be allowed full access to the off-campus gym and its facilities by showing their valid student identification card, so students can continue working on their fitness goals.
N: Read an announcement from the campus newspaper. Now listen to two students discussing the announcement.
M: Hey Susan did you see this article in the paper? They're finally going to fix up the gym locker rooms.
F: Yeah, it's about time they did something to address the situation in the gym, but they're doing it the wrong way.
M: I don't understand.
F: What I mean is that it's going to be really inconvenient and students might be even less likely to exercise.
M: Really?
F: Yeah, think about it, most students don't have cars. So how are they going to get into town?
M: Oh, I see. They're going to have to take the bus.
F: Exactly, and a bus ride into town takes 30 to 40 minutes one way if you don't have to wait for the bus. Student's schedules are already hectic enough. I think that students might not have enough time and not make the extra effort to go to the gym in town.
M: I know what you mean. It's hard for me to get motivated to go to the gym, now it is going to be even harder.
F: What the university should do is to leave the equipment room …
M: Where all the exercise machines are?
F: Yeah. They should just leave the equipment room of the gym open during the renovations, you know, just close the locker rooms for the repairs.
M: Yeah, you're right!
F: Students could still work out in the gym, and then they could go walk back to their dorms and take a shower and change their clothes before they have to go to class.
