On his first sea voyage, Christopher followed the same route earlier Portuguese explorers made to Asia by going down the African coast. From there he went west. He believed he could reach Asia on this new route.
He failed to reach Asia, but arrived in Guanahani, an island in the Americas, on October 12, 1492. Christopher sailed to Guanahani in three ships: La Niña, La Pinta and the Santa Maria. He guessed he had reached his goal, but he actually discovered a new continent. Christopher died believing that he had made it to Asia. He did not know he had come to a new world.
