Chapter 6
The escape
Daniel looked back over the valley. In the distance he could see a car. It was coming towards him. It was
too far away but he was sure it was Willy and George Robertson. His heart was beating fast. 'I mustn't
panic,' he thought. He looked at the river in front of him. He wasn't a good swimmer. The river was too
wide and the current was too strong to cross. The only alternative was to climb the steep, rocky hill. His
backpack was too heavy to carry, so he hid it under a rock and he started climbing. After ten minutes, the
rocks were too steep for him to continue. Where were Willy and George? Surely they were climbing up
behind him! He stopped and listened. But the sound of the water was too loud. He couldn't hear anything
above chat noise.
Then Daniel noticed a narrow path of rocks above the river. Was it too narrow? Probably, but he had no
alternative. He took a deep breath and started along the path, one step at a time... And the next thing he
knew... He was falling... Falling towards the dark water below.

Daniel miró hacia el valle. En la distancia podía ver un auto. Venía hacia él. Estaba muy lejos pero él estaba seguro que eran Willy y George Robertson. Su corazón latía rápidamente. 'No debo apanicarme' pensó. Miro el río enfrente de él. No era un buen nadador. El río era muy largo y la corriente era muy fuerte para cruzar.
