Si Nessi, el monstruo escocés, es una de las criaturas más famosas por su leyenda, en Australia encontramos a su primo hermano, al que los aborígenes australianos llaman bunyip. Este monstruo marino habita en ciénagas, pantanos y ríos, devorando a quien ose adentrarse en su territorio.
El hábitat de esta criatura es el outback, se trata del interior remoto y semi-árido de Australia. Es la parte del país donde abundan las famosas granjas, una zona enorme dedicada también al turismo y la minería.
El bunyip, que en lenguaje nativo significa demonio, se caracteriza por no encontrar dos descripciones iguales de esta criatura. Un granjero que aseguró haber tenido un encuentro con uno de estos monstruos, lo describió de color marrón, con cabeza de canguro, cuello de cisne y grande como un buey. Los dibujos realizados por los aborígenes contemplan mil formas diferentes, algunos se parecen al bigfoot, otros mantienen un aspecto de un ave gigantesca.
Al parecer y según los zoólogos, esta criatura tiene su origen en los Palorquestidos, un tipo de herbívoros muy grandes, que fueron vistos hace mucho tiempo habitando en terrenos pantanosos. Aunque estos animales están extinguidos hace muchos años, es la única explicación para entender el misterio del bunyip.
Las leyendas del bunyip circulan desde hace casi dos siglos. En 1847 la prensa Australiana publicaba noticias referentes a este monstruo. Entonces era descrito como un humano, pero con rasgos y detalles horripilantes. Es más probable que estas descripciones sean exageradas a que puedan existir versiones distintas de esta misma especie.
Hay quien, a falta de una explicación lógica, aseguraba que el bunyip eran los salteadores de caminos y ladrones que se escondían en la seguridad de las ciénagas para no ser capturados , gritaban para infundir un temor que les mantuviera alejados de ser descubiertos.
