 My grandmother was born not long after the Great Depression. She was one of five children. She had two older brothers (one of them died of polio when my grandmother was only seven) and two younger sisters. Her father had a small bakery at the end of Grainger Street, where he made and sold bread and pound cake. My grandmother worked in the bakery on Saturdays when she was young.
