There are 5 rules when speaking in English:
1) You have to get your point across: While grammarly it doesn't have to be the best or perfect, the listener should still be able to understand and formulate a response based off of what you say. If you cannot say (a) coherent sentence(s), then you won't have a conversation.
2) Make eye contact: Unless you are in trouble (even then), most Americans would ask you to "look me in the eye", as it is one of the rules of making a conversation in the US. However, this rule is not generally followed as much anymore, and it depends on who you are talking to.
3) Respect Elders: This tradition is fairly dying in the 21st century, but in many cases, the younger generation should always look up to the previous generation for advice, help, and lessons.
4) Keep things positive: Unless the topic itself is kind of shady, or the topic is serious or sad, you should always try to give a more positive outlook on whatever the topic is.
5) Be polite: This is also like Elders, but is more towards strangers in general. Unless you feel threatened, you should always act natural and polite when asked a question from a stranger.
