Esta enfermedad hemorrágica ha resurgido como una grave amenaza para la salud pública a nivel mundial después de los brotes que en 2016 afectaron a algunas ciudades con mucha población de Angola y la República Democrática del Congo, causando unas 400 muertes. Asimismo, actualmente Brasil está luchando contra su peor brote de fiebre amarilla en décadas, con más de mil casos confirmados.
La iniciativa, conocida como 'Eye' (ojo, en sus siglas en inglés), cuenta con el apoyo de la Alianza de Vacunas GAVI, UNICEF y más de 50 organizaciones sanitarias, según anunció el secretario general de este organismo de Naciones Unidas, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, durante una reunión celebrada en Abuja (Nigeria).
