The earthquake of Pompeii
The earthquake of Pompeii in the year 62 was an earthquake that took place on February 5 of the year 62 with epicenter in the area of Mount Vesuvius, It had an estimated magnitude of 5 and 6 and a maximum intensity of XI or X in the Mercalli intensity scale. The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were severely damaged. The earthquake could have been a precedent for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79, which destroyed both locations. The philosopher and dramatist Seneca wrote a chronicle about the event in the sixth book of his Natural quaestiones, entitled De Terrae Motu (Relating to earthquakes)
Damages and consequences
The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were the ones that suffered the most damage, while in Naples and Nocera there were also damages in some buildings. There were numerous collapses, as evidenced by archaeological excavations. The consequences of the main shaking and subsequent tremors were largely repaired in Pompeii and Herculaneum before the eruption of the year 79, although some buildings still remained uninhabited and in the reconstruction phase or showed signs of recent repairs. In the house of Lucio Cecilio Jocundo in Pompeii were a couple of bas-reliefs, probably belonging to the lararium of the house, which are considered a testimony of the effects of the earthquake.
The earthquake allowed the philosopher, playwright and Roman statesman Seneca the Younger to dedicate the sixth book of his Natural quaestiones to the subject of earthquakes, describing the event of February 5 and attributing the cause of them to the movement of air. Seneca also documented the death of a flock of 600 sheep that he attributed to the effects of toxic gases.
