                           history of military uniforms

The word lace means lace here. Look carefully, because that word will appear immediately.

A long time ago, the only soldiers in uniform were the guards of the palaces and those who escorted important people. Maybe you saw in a movie what they were like: bright colors, with gold or silver ornaments, with lace. The rest of the soldiers, who were many more, put on anything.

As armies were formed, countries began to manufacture clothing for their soldiers. The idea of dressing everyone the same was just to simplify things: they bought the fabrics, they sent them to cut, sew and decorate and ready the uniform!

Although they were all the same, the suits worn by the soldiers had nothing to recognize what country they were from. That is why, as time passed, each country added special ornaments and details to their uniforms: the Italians wore helmets with feathers, the Poles wore very pointed shoes, and the Scots wore skirts (yes skirts!).

Obviously, this set was very expensive and, of course, tremendously uncomfortable. Can you imagine a soldier fleeing the enemy trying not to drop his helmet with feathers? Do you have an idea of what it must be like to climb a mountain with pointed boots? And to walk with a skirt in the snow?

About a hundred years ago, the military designers began to design uniforms with a different idea: to be comfortable, practical, cheap and durable.

Some time later, when a terrible war broke out in which a lot of countries fought, the French came up with something else: to dress in the colors of the earth and the plants, so that their enemies could not easily discover them. And they hid their weapons and their camps with plants and fabrics of the same colors, so that they would not see them from the air.

In a short time, all the countries copied the camouflage of the French, and they left definitively the colorful and decorated uniforms.

By the way, do you know why it's called camouflage? Because, in French, camoufler means to disguise.

What do you think? Have you seen how the uniforms worn by the soldiers are now? And the cops? Who has noticed? What are they wearing? The weapons have changed a lot, and the uniforms too.
