THE HISTORY OF CARTAGENA DE INDIAS.

Cartagena de Indias was founded on June 1, 1533 by Pedro Heredia. Cartagena became prosperous due to the export of gold, emeralds and other riches. It was also a commercial port for ships traveling from Peru to Cuba and then to Spain.
The prosperity of Cartagena de Indias attracted the interest of the pirates who attacked the city for this reason, walls and fortresses were built around the city. Cartagena became the most protected city in South America. The construction of this wall was made by African slaves.
Cartagena de Indias was emancipated from Spanish rule on November 11, 1811.
Its main historical monuments are the San Felipe castle, palace of the Inquisition, Plaza de las Vaveras, clock tower, San Pedro Claver church, walled city, indigenous catalina monument, among others.
