Two are the polar regions, but they have completely different characteristics and origins. In the northern hemisphere, the Arctic is a mass of floating ice that is maintained by low temperatures, while in the southern hemisphere, Antarctica is a continent, today frozen but in the past hosted a rich flora and abundant wildlife .

The polar regions receive less solar radiation since the sun's energy reaches the planet at an oblique angle, spreading over a larger area, and also traveling a longer distance through the earth's atmosphere, in which it can be absorbed , scattered or reflected.

The axial tilt of the Earth has a greater effect in the polar regions. Since the polar regions are the furthest from the equator, they receive the least amount of sunlight and therefore are the coldest. The large amount of ice and snow also reflects a large part of the low light they receive, contributing to the cold. The polar regions are characterized by polar climate, extremely cold temperatures, glaciation where there is enough precipitation to form permanent ice and extreme variations in daylight hours: twenty-four hours of light in summer (the midnight sun), and darkness in winter.
