"There is" en español significa "hay" pero sólo cuando se trata de un objeto(Singular).

"There are" tiene el mismo significado de "hay" pero cuando es más de un objeto(Plural). Por ejemplo:

1. There are two chairs in my living room. Traducción: Hay dos sillas en mi sala. (PLURAL).

2. There is a car parked in my garage. Traducción: Hay un carro parqueado en mi garaje. (SINGULAR).

Más ejemplos:

There are four apartments in my building.

There is only one room in my house, it is very small!
