What is the abortion?

The word abortion comes from the Latin term (abortus), ab: deprivation, and ortus: birth. Its translation would be: without birth.

Therefore, abortion is the interruption of the development of the embryo during pregnancy, when it has not yet reached fetal maturity, or sufficient capacity to live outside the uterus.

The Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE) or legal abortion is the procedure where it is sought to end consciously with a pregnancy in progress. Many countries are restrictive about these practices, which causes some women to resort to interruptions or abortions in an illegal and insecure manner, seriously endangering their lives and health.

In contrast, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in countries where women have access to safe services, the probability of death as a result of an abortion or interruption is 1 per 100,000 procedures.

Speaking of abortion and voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVE) seems, in principle, the same, but we must bear in mind that behind the word ABORTION, a series of imaginaries related to illegality, fear and, in the worst case, crime. The expression IVE, Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy, allows to analyze a reality from the field of ethics, freedom and autonomy of women and allows a decision from the perspective of sexual and reproductive rights, which, above all, are human rights.

There are two types of abortions: the spontaneous or natural and the induced.

Miscarriage occurs when an embryo or fetus is expelled from the woman's uterus due to natural causes, in most cases, with the health and age of the pregnant woman.

Induced abortion, on the other hand, is one that is performed voluntarily with or without medical assistance. It is recommended that this type of abortion is always carried out with medical assistance to avoid unsafe practices that put the life of the woman at risk.

The procedures vary according to the time of pregnancy, the woman's health conditions and access to providers or health centers that can offer the procedure adequately and safely. There are two techniques to perform IVE:

• With medications

• Surgical
